“Training for the Future” – Sustainability Vocational Training for Decision Makers and Managers (November 2004 – April 2007)

Goals
The overall aim of the project is to contribute to the understanding and practice of corporate sustainability and to develop and test training materials to help this process. For this reason, the training materials are intended to be practical and will be supplemented with case studies from all participating organisations. The training package – consisting of PPT slides, a handbook and an accompanying trainer’s guide, a multimedia learning kit and web-based discussion forum facility – is going to be created with the involvement of partners from 4 countries, drawing on and making use of the experience and already existing materials of all partners, and at the same time developing them.

The project also initiates a new type of cooperation between the non-governmental sector, industry and educational institutions as the training package will be developed with the involvement of all three sectors.

EMAS Easy for SMEs Coaching program (October 2004 - March 2006)

Goals
The aim of the project is to provide support to the implementation of the EMAS Regulation in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Hungary by promoting the EU EMAS Scheme and building capacity for the application of the EMAS. The project provides support in terms of practical capacity building of EMAS implementation in these new Member States in particular regarding small and medium sized organisations and enterprises (SMEs).
Main objectives are:
to test and apply EMAS Easy at SMEs;
to disseminate EMAS Easy;
to get SMEs to EMAS certificate;
to train the EMAS consultants on EMAS Easy;
to raise awareness of EMAS in the EU members;
to raise EMAS certifications among SMEs.

Goals
To support the development of SMEs by reinforcing local development policies based on sustainable development criteria,
To sustain the development and test methodologies targeted to foster SMEs development and a sustainable economic growth at the regional level,

EMAS 4 countries (May 2004 – March 2005)

Goals and Method
To deliver one-day workshops about the introduction of EMAS (the European Union's voluntary Environmental Management and Audit Scheme) in new member states (Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Latvia). The objective of the workshops is to inform all stakeholders about the process of EMAS certification, its advantages and methodology, and also to provide practical tools to assist in implementation. The other main objective of the project is to prepare the basis for long-term cooperation and networking between the participating organisations in the field of environmental management.

Saving for Success: The European Energy Trophy (September 2004-November 2005)

Goals
To decrease the energy consumption of the office buildings of the Hungarian compnies. To increase the energy awareness of the participant employees and companies.

Method
International competition between the 41 offices in the 6 involved countries by measuring energy consumption and decrease. 5 Hungarian companies joined the trophy.

Result
There are 4 different prizes to the winners: International main prize to the most efficient in absolute value and relative value of electricity decrease. National prize for the relative best company, and international prize for the most creative solution.

KÉKKŐ Project (March 2003 – October 2004)

Goals
A common project of EMLA (Environmental Management and Law Association) and KÖVET, KÉKKŐ aimed to broaden the Aarhusi Agreement principle („increasing environmental awareness of the public”) in the micro-, small- and medium sized enterprises.

Method
The two organisations combined their experience in environmental law and environmental management with representatives of the target group at 2-day free-of-charge trainings throughout the country. About thirty two-day trainings were delivered all over the country.

Eco-Business Project in Romanie (November 2002 – September 2003)

Goals
“Cleaner environment – less expenditure”. This was the title of the project that was started in 2002 by the Romanian Environmental Partnership Foundation (REPF, seated in Csíkszereda, Romania) as a part of their Eco-Business programme. The main aim of the project was to introduce practical environmental management tools to local entrepreneurs and make them set off on the road to becoming more sustainable in the future.

Method
KÖVET-INEM Hungária, as a project-partner, provided 6 training for local entrepreneurs in 2002-2003 on highlighted topics of environmental management, like Good housekeeping – Eco-mapping, Environmental performance evaluation, Green office, Products and environment, Green Design, Material and energy flow analysis, and Savings trough environmental measures.

Results
All trainings were visited by the same group of 25 companies who were satisfied with what they learned and also – thanks to the numerous workshops – what they could try in practice through eco-mappings and other exercises. At the end of the project all of them received a certificate and a booklet was published out on the project, case studies of each participating company and the overall results.

EcoStar – programme (autumn 2002 – autumn 2004)

Goals
To improve the environmental awareness and environmental performance of Small and Medium Sized Entreprises with a practical method, called EcoStar. The method has been developed by integrating two different practical tools: Heinz Werner Engel’s Eco-mapping (Belgian Association of Eco-counsellors, ABECE) and Potstar of the Puskás Tivadar Foundation (PTA, Hungary).

Method
During the project 50 SMEs were trained in three groups. Afterwards, KÖVET carried out demonstration programmes at 15 SMEs with monitoring after 3 months. SMEs also participated in a competion: the three SMEs that improved their environmental performance most during the project obtained financial support for their environmental actions. The case-studies and experiences of the project will soon be available on the Internet.

Epicentre - programme (January 2002 – March 2003)

Goals
To improve the environmental performance of SMEs functioning in the EU (and in Hungary), based on the so-called Acorn-methodology developed in the UK and Ireland. The most important characteristics of the methodology is that it allows for the step-by-step introduction and audit of an ISO 14001 management system.

Method
In the frame of training series (called “ISO 14001 Put Simply”), KÖVET trained SMEs interested in EMS-implementation in 8 regions of Hungary.

BALTEMA (2002-2004)

Goals
To support the establishment of Baltic Environmental Management Associations(BALTEMA) in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
To support the EU Accession Policy of the Baltic States with regard to mind setting in industry towards environmental friendly and sustainable management practices.

Method
KÖVET is a member of the International Network for Environmental Management (INEM), with its Secretariat in Hamburg. We are often involved in regional projects, like the currently running BALTEMA. The Project is INEM’s largest project which promotes environmental management in the Baltic States.

Goals
To spread and promote environmental management and cleaner production among SMEs. These tools reduce their environmental impact and also serve their market interests.
To establish several regional offices of KÖVET in Hungary in order to accelerate the dissemination activity of the organisation and to make environmental management related information available for the most possible companies in the country.

Method
Trainings at the enterprises trough KÖVET’s regional offices.

Results
Hundreds of companies were reached with the project and all trainings were popular and visited by a significant number of participants, but none of the established offices kept working or operated for long after the end of the project.

EEVE Multiplier Project (December 1999 – March 2000)

Goals
To develop an interactive Environmentally Friendly Office distance learning programme on KÖVET’s homepage and to introduce the advantages of distance learning to the target group and create demand for this method of education, so that it becomes possible for KÖVET to rework more of its programmes in he future and add another channel of communication to its dissemination activity.

Method
The job was done mainly by KÖVET, the only subcontractor hired helped with the graphical design and special functions of the webpage. KÖVET compiled the necessary database, the curricular material, the system of guiding the visitor through the programme and made everything as interactive as possible.

Results
The programme is available on the Internet and has been used by over a hundred of visitors in the past few years. tavoktatas.kovet.hu

TISOT – Cleaner Environment and Environmental Management System Training (October 1999 – June 2000)

Goals
To introduce an EMS combined with cleaner production to 10-20 SMEs by training them in groups.

Method
The representatives of the companies meet monthly to learn the introduction of the EMS and the practice of pollution prevention.

Result
By the end of the programme, the companies reduced their environmental impact and had an EMS system ready for audit. Altogether, there were 19 companies involved. The programme continued in the EPICENTRE programme.

EMS-registration (continuous)

Goals
The EMS-registration of KÖVET-INEM Hungária contains data of most ISO 14001 or EMAS certified companies in Hungary. As certified companies are not obliged to register, the list might not be full.

Method
Using a wide range of channels KÖVET regularly updates the database and publishes the list every 3 months in its ‘Steps’ newsletter and on its webpage.

Result
We have updated information about and connection to more than 1100 Hungarian companies operating ISO 14001 or EMAS.
